How I got lost

March 13th, 2009

I wasn’t always lost.

How did I get here?

Maybe it was my approaching university graduation.  I started thinking about my decisions (instead of just deciding) and the affect that they could have on my future.  After graduating, I applied for a few jobs that I didn’t get, and ultimately went back to work at the restaurant I grew up with.  A year later, I applied to and was offered the first interesting job I came across.

It sucked.

Unemployment gives you plenty of time to doubt yourself.  It also gives you time to read something other than your email.  I frequented the career and self-help sections at Chapters and read A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle and The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.  I stared at the screen for hours reading every personal development and career advice article I could find.

My job prospects are no better than they were three months ago, but I am now confident that each of us has a passion, a true purpose in life that we are meant to discover and live for every day.  It doesn’t really matter how I got lost, how any of us get lost, as long as we keep moving forward to find our way.

Get involved.  Leave comments.  Give advice.  Ask for advice.
